Choosing Brave: Feminism & the Written Word Studio+

Respect our existence or expect resistance.

Cheryl Strayed says in her memoir, Wild, ‘and so I chose to tell myself a different story from the one women are told. I decided I was safe. I was strong. I was brave.’ This sort of manifesto is at the core of twenty first century Feminism.  

As women, we are always telling ourselves another story to propel us forward into truth, into discovery, and into ourselves; many feminist writers, memoirists, novelists, and poets are writing towards that same agenda. Part of that history is the struggle to be heard, to be believed and to be understood. Now, more than ever, we need to gather strength from the past to propel us into the present and beyond.  

In this course, we will read poems by twenty-first century feminist poets and, in so doing, discover their agency, their risk-taking, and their decision to be strong and brave in the world of the poem. Poets we will read will include Lynn Melnick, Dorothea Lasky, Barbara Louise Ungar, Brenda Shaughnessy, Doireann Ní Ghríofa, Amy Key, Diane Seuss, and more.

This course will also feature a live Zoom reading, where the participants can share the new work produced on the course. This will take place on Monday 27 June.

Studio+ Courses are a new initiative from the Poetry School and feature a portfolio of preliminary reading, alongside 4 writing assignments, and some additional bonus features such as Zoom sessions, collaborative projects, and inter-disciplinary work. There are no Live Chats on this course.
