Access for Wheelchair Users
The Poetry School is accessible for wheelchair users via portable ramps at the rear (courtyard) entrance. Details of the courtyard entrance are below in the ‘Our venue’ section. There is a wheelchair-accessible bathroom, which is also accessible via a portable ramp. Poetry School staff (usually our caretaker, Ed) will always be on site during workshops to assist you. Please contact the School on 020 7582 1679 or [email protected] ahead of your visit so that a member of staff is ready to assist you.
The Dock Offices building is an L-shaped building, which runs along Surrey Quays Road and extends back towards Deal Porters Way and the large shopping centre car park.
The main entrance to the School is on Surrey Quays Road. Three steps lead up to the door (total height 45cm), which has a clear opening of 95cm. There is a video entryphone activated by a button located to the right of the door at the top of the steps. If you are unable to use this, please let us know in advance and we will arrange to let you in. This entrance is not accessible for wheelchair users; please use the courtyard entrance.
There is a second entrance off the courtyard accessed by a pedestrian pathway off Surrey Quays road or the carpark at the back of the building, which is accessed via Deal Porters Way. This entrance is via one external and two internal doors which have respective clear openings of 80cm and 71cm. The step to the door off the courtyard is approximately 17cm high. Two small portable ramps are used for wheelchair access at this entrance. If you would like to use this entrance, please do give us advance notice and we will arrange to let you in.
The main entrance foyer and disabled toilet are separated from the classrooms by a step which is 20.5cm in height.
There is a cobbled carpark at the back of the building which is accessed by a small turning off Deal Porters Way near the Tesco garage. There is a bay for blue badge holders in the bays closest to the courtyard, straight ahead as you pass through the carpark entrance. The courtyard space incorporates both steps and ramps.
Canada Water Underground and Overground station provides step free access routes by lift from all of the platforms. The lift exit is located on Surrey Quays Road about 200 metres from the main entrance to our venue.
