Nature Calling is calling Writers…

Are you a published writer? Do you love nature writing and want to inspire audiences to connect with the National Landscapes of England? Do you have a meaningful connection to one of these six regions:

  • Chilterns
  • Dorset
  • Forest of Bowland
  • Lincolnshire Wolds
  • Mendip Hills
  • Surrey Hills

Nature Calling is a ground-breaking national project, that will commission an exceptional, diverse range of artists to explore and celebrate nature and our National Landscapes (formerly known as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty). Specifically designed to listen to communities and ensure our landscapes are a place for everyone, Nature Calling is inviting writers and artists to respond to this brief, for a programme that culminates in a season between May and October 2025.

Proposals are welcome from published writers, in any writing discipline but ideally writers new to nature writing, who share a special connection with one of the areas listed above. The project is looking to commission writers with a new perspective on nature, place and people, to write a piece specific to one of the regions. The period of engagement will be from July to October 2024 and commissioned writers will benefit from advisory support including individual mentoring support from Poetry School.

Nature Calling is a nationally significant partnership project between the National Landscape Association, Activate Performing Arts and Poetry School, the aim of which is to listen to communities and ensure landscapes are a place for everyone. It will engage new audiences across England and inspire the whole National Landscapes family. Each of the 34 National Landscapes in England will work collaboratively with their local communities.

Applications are invited for commissions, one for each of the six National Landscape hubs.

Instructions on how to apply are in the commission brief here, and more information on the six hub locations is in the appendices. Nature Calling is looking for a higher number of writers from the global majority.
