Scots Rose

On Friday, I visit the Royal Infirmary
tae find Dad nestled in the green
of the Necropolis. Who thocht
it was therapeutic
tae put dyin auld men in trolleys
set tae the tilt of gravestones?

I cradle his purpled hand.

On Saturday, I’m in the garden
where you’d never guess
tae look at the gnarled stems,
that past the brush and bruise,
the rot, the liverish leaf,
is a single rose.

It stuns the hedge pink.

Stay tuned for the final feature on the shortlisted poets next week, and find out the full Primers shortlist here.
