Do I have to have a degree to be accepted onto this master’s course?
No. The decision to accept applicants is portfolio-based therefore formal qualifications are not necessarily required.
Do I have to have attended writing poetry classes previously to apply?
No. As long as you have a portfolio of poetry to submit as part of your application, you can apply.
How long is the course?
This is a part-time course that lasts two years.
Is the MA an in-person course?
Yes. The regular classes take place in Somerset House, Strand, London.
Is this an official degree?
Yes. The Poetry School MA is accredited by Newcastle University where a sister version of this course also runs.
Who teaches the course?
The core tutors are Glyn Maxwell and Meryl Pugh. Guest tutors feature each term and for several sessions during Summer School. Past guests include Caroline Bird, Caleb Femi and Joelle Taylor in London and Don Paterson, Malika Booker and Sasha Dugdale in Newcastle.
How much class time is there?
There is 1 x 2 hour class each week on either a Tuesday at 2.00 p.m. or a Wednesday at 4.00 p.m.
The Autumn and Spring Terms run for 10 weeks each.
Summer School is one full week of study running in London and Newcastle alternately. You can read more about the course outline and bios of both our core tutors here.
Do I get 1-2-1 time with expert tutors?
Yes. Each term, students have a tutorial with both of the core tutors.
How many students are there in a class?
There is a maximum of 12 students in each Autumn and Spring term class.
Is there a typical profile for an MA in Writing Poetry student?
No! We teach students of all ages, backgrounds and levels of experience.
Is there a deadline for application?
Yes. The deadline is the end of July but as there are limited places, it’s wise to get your application in well before.
