How to Prepare & Publish your First Pamphlet
Gain the knowledge, confidence, and courage to get your first pamphlet out there .
* This course will take place on the video-conferencing platform ZOOM *
Thinking about your first pamphlet?
We will cover the 3 key stages of getting your first pamphlet out into the world; 1) sequencing 2) editing and 3) publishing.
1) Sequencing: We’ll work through questions of theme and coherence, getting to grips with the skill of laying out poems in a sequence for a book. We’ll consider sections and transitions, and practical ways to grapple with how poems meet each other side by side, page to page.
2) Editing: We’ll dive into the messy world of editing, being clear and brutal with your poems. We’ll look at how to collaborate with fellow poets, seeking out ways to get mutual support in editing and polishing your pamphlet. We’ll think about selection, and how to let go when a poem isn’t fitting in this sequence.
3) Publishing: We’ll work through submissions; finding a home for your work, understanding publishers and keeping track of submission windows. We’ll cover a section on getting work accepted and what to expect from the publishing process itself. We’ll consider important ideas on finding a community, staying resilient to rejection and continuing to find joy and inspiration whilst navigating the highs and lows of publication.
This is a practical course aimed at anyone who has developed a body of work and wants to take practical steps towards their first pamphlet.
1-off Zoom session at 6.30–9.00pm (BST on Tuesday 15th September)
