Nothing to Write About? Breaking Writers’ Block

Nothing to Write About? Breaking Writers’ Block

Unsticking a stuck poet.

Writer’s block can be paralysing. When you’re waiting for an idea to strike, it can sometimes feel like you’ll never write a poem again. If you’re feeling stuck, this is a practical, half-day workshop that aims to give you the tools to find inspiration again. We’ll explore a selection of generative writing exercises that aim to pull inspiration from unlikely, everyday sources you can dip in and out of when the well of inspiration dries up.

The session will include quick-fire prompts, trawling the web for titles and first lines, using online tools to take an idea into a new direction, techniques for escaping craft and erasure corners, and exercises that take your writing outdoors. The aim of this generative workshop is not to leave with a selection of polished poems but to allow yourself the space to experiment and try new things and to provide practical tools to help you break writers’ block in the future.

In addition to the prompts, we will also look at poems that get you excited about writing again. We will read poems by Chen Chen, Bernadette Mayer, James Tate, Natalie Shapero, Diane Seuss, and explore the unusual risks and routes they take.

All extra materials will be provided, the only thing you need to bring is a notebook or laptop to write on. Each prompt is optional and while sharing is always welcome, it is absolutely not mandatory. All levels welcome and no previous experience with poetry writing needed.

1 x half-day session, running 10.30am – 1pm (BST), on 21 June 2025. This course will take place at The Bindery, 51 Hatton Garden, London, EC1N 8HN.
