‘And I Will Tell About It:’ The Poetry of Sharon Olds

‘And I Will Tell About It:’ The Poetry of Sharon Olds

Explore the radical work of one of contemporary poetry’s true greats as inspiration for your own writing.

* This course will take place on the video-conferencing platform ZOOM *

Sharon Olds’s poems broke ground when they appeared on the poetry scene in the 1970s. The narrative one stanza poems with their surprising line breaks and abundant similes bluntly exploring marital intimacy and motherhood were unheard of at the time. In this course we will dive into poems spanning Olds’s career beginning with poems from her first collection, Satan Says, and then moving through poems in The Dead and the Living and The Gold Cell and the subsequent books up to the most recent poems. Prompts to generate new poems will be given after the first session. The second session will be spent workshopping student poems inspired by Olds.

2 x half-day sessions, running 2–4.30pm (BST/GMT), on 30 Oct & 6 Nov 2024. This course will take place on the video-conferencing platform ZOOM.
