Hi Mat and anyone else who is still out there!

Hope you find this post Mat as Poetry School no longer send notifications. Lydia, both your poems – The Herring Gull’s Tale and Transfer are wonderful, in different ways. I love the shift between form.

 

I love the way the HGT shifts from simpler times to more brand-heavy stuff – the Orkney Ice Cream, the Walker’s crisps, etc.

 

I particularly like the ending of the poem, the way I can’t tell if the Seagull’s are telling us the plan, galvanising each other to action or caught some way…Has the poem changed at all since you wrote it?

 

Transfer feels like a much less sprawling poem, and possibly more familiar ground for you – apologies if that is projecting too far..I love the slings and arrows (any outrageous fortune going on?) and the broken imagery of potholes, felled trees, etc. It sits nicely with the start of the poem.

Could the road unspool like a bandage?

 

The final lines though, oof. What a kick to the head..

Lydia, I hope you’re on the mend. Thanks for putting up both poem, I’ve downloaded them to take away with me as I’m off on holiday tomorrow. A bit of time and a bit of headspace will do me wonders..

 

However, love the Seagull poem on my first scan through. I need to go back to it, but I actually like the change in voice and the description/detail in the second half. It shows the gulls have evolved as much as/more than we have.

 

Proper comments all round in a couple of weeks when I get back to wifi and calm..

His 50 year successful career was influenced by Jack Kerouac’s ‘On the Road’. In the film he discusses song writing, poetry and his life as a modern day wandering minstrel. Allan is still touring even though he’s now in his seventies. I’m also including his song ‘The Beat Hotel’ for fans of folk music.
