THE 24/7 POETRY CHALLENGE – THE RESULTS

Thank you to everyone who submitted poems – we were incredibly impressed with the variety and quality of work on show.

24~7 challenge Sorry couldn’t upload (NB all dashes are em dashes).

S/hades
The moon’s distorted shadows
give false impressions of romance –
the scene does not match rose-tinted
views – clay feet of lawmakers gather
dust – they call for marriage redemption –
in dream streams – embrace is accepted –
but – bumps linger like moles under eyes
and eaves – supernatural thieves – tunnel
grief – ghosting through regret – so much
is promised in the present – yet so little
is given – images remain the same – glass
on glass on glass – smashed dreams – rockets
of celebration and exploration does not bode
well for our species – a candle burns – its wick
charred and scarred – and its light – unlike
the shades of falsehood – won’t exist – in 24~7

Hi everyone, Hope you are all enjoying the Open Day on CAMPUS. Thanks to @willbarrett for an amazing job organising all this. To answer Will’s questions:
1. I’ve been writing poetry with something approximating vague focus for about 4-5 years . I’m a slow writer.
2. This is a hard one but I do quite like ’brackish’. And ’limbic’.
3. Elizabeth Bishop and August Kleinzahler
4. The opposite of Will’s: If you get an idea for a poem, however fragmentary it is, write it down immediately. But when you don’t do this, Will’s advice is a good salve (though basically not true!)

But I\’ll give some quick answers to those intro Q\’s –

1. I wrote a few poems when I was younger (just for myself). It became a serious pastime for me about 7 years ago when I started taking online courses/ clinics from Bill Greenwell (Exeter U) and then I also started taking online Poetry School courses.

2. fav. words – joy & enjoy

3. couple of fav. poets – Emily Dickinson, Kay Ryan, Milton Acorn

4. advice – it\’s very impt. to build, value & maintain ties in a community where we can share our work and encourage each other

I\’m American but live in London – for 5 years now; the longer I\’ve been (and written) here the more strained/strange my \”native\” English becomes to me, relative to Brit English, and vice versa. My diction begins to confuse & crumple! Your work is so grounded in \”non-native\” (Shetland, Canada, Mexico) places and language. How does the strangeness of language & the \”dislocation\” motivate you? Does it ever become a barrier; how do you overcome it?

Hi everyone, here’s my digital response to Will’s questions:

1. I’m a very late starter (don’t ask!) but I’ve been writing poetry for about 5 years.
2. Favourite word today is Cockroach (just listen to the crunch).
3. Favourite poet (s) there are lots, but for today Selima Hill, Esther Morgan and Sharon Olds.
4. Best advice: pretend to be a Martian looking at something for the first time.

I’m looking forward to Kim’s surgery this evening and the secret words being released at midday!

#byssus
First: \”Prunk\”? It seems to come from Shetland dialect or even German but its meaning (for splendour or to make smart or splendid) in Lichen is strained. But it works exquisitely, perhaps more by its sound (or music) than its literal meaning. There are many examples in your poems. What\’s your impulse / attitude toward literal and sonic \”meaning\”? Does sound, or denotation, have priority; does it vary – by feeling or reason?
Similarly, you \”play\” with conventional punctuation (eg, Puffballs & Plinky Boat); and lineation (The March Springs & In Revolution Politics Becomes Nature).

Hello all. I tried CAMPUS before Xmas and enjoyed a couple of Open Workshops. My first chatroom ever was on CAMPUS! This Open Day is a good idea for new and old comers.
1.	Other than in adolescence, I’ve been writing poems for about six years.
2.	Mmm..Maybe ‘sprachle’: a lovely scrambling, clambering, wrestling sort of a climb which, in my childhood, used to end with a lot of laughing and cuddling with my Auntie.
3.	No way I could choose just one. Maybe Donne and Dickinson on a desert island with Shakespeare and Bible. I come back often to reading Andrew Waterhouse.
4.	‘Read, read, read’. and ‘Just do it’.

Hi Everyone,

My digital Open Day Questions/Intro
1. How long have you been writing poetry for?
Since I was a kid, very intermittently. Took it up again around 1998/9, more solidly since 2003.
2. Favourite word?
Changes every 5 secs. ’Oops-a-daisy’ maybe, or ’hypotenuse’ or ’crescendo’ or…
3. Favourite poet?
Also changes. William Blake, TS Eliot, Ted Hughes…Anne Carson, Michael Symmons Roberts, Tiffany Atkinson…Jacques Prevert (French poet)
4. Best piece of writing advice?
Never accept any given thing (eg advice) without testing/examining it yourself first. Good life advice too.
🙂

Looking forward to Q&A with Jen Hadfield. Wish I had discovered the open day earlier…

Intro:
I have been writing poetry since I could write. I am improving slowly.

My most recent favourite word discovery is \”hiraeth\”. It is Welsh. It is about longing and home.

Rosemarie Waldrop\’s \”Lawn of Excluded Middle\” keeps pulling me back right now.

Advice: from Austin Kleon –
I\’m about to start my 3rd PS course – I have always dabbled with writing poetry but only now starting to take it seriously!
Love everything about PS.
My favourite poet changes frequently. Mary Oliver at the moment – has also been Rumi, Wordsworth (still right up there) UA Fanthorpe, Ted Hughes, Dylan Thomas.
Best Piece of advice – keep writing even when it\’s not going well!

I suppose I ought to answer my own questions…

1) Well I\’ve written the odd thing since I started working at the Poetry School, but I\’ve always been a reader not a writer. I write music – I find words a bit troublesome

2) It\’s not a real word but \’murmuressness\’ pleases me. Although I think it needs more \’m\’s\’

3) My favourite poet changes. I read \’Crow\’ by Ted Hughes obsessively between the ages of 18-21, but wouldn\’t call him my favourite poet. I also like Thomases (Hardy, RS, Edward). Gosh – very male list isn\’t it? Emily Dickinson, then, for balance.

4) Best advice? If you forget an idea it probably wasn\’t worth remembering in the first place.

So, four things then:
1. Like Charlotte, I\’ve always made notes towards a poem, but I\’ve been writing more attentively for the last five years.
2. Today\’s favourite word is \’apothecary\’.
3. Favourite poets? S\’trewth, it changes by the hour! Today it\’s Kathleen Jamie, John Burnside and Robing Robertson (I must be on a Scottish roll this morning!).
4. Best piece of writing advice (or at least, the one that I try to use most often) is \’Pay particular attention to verbs – that’s where the energy is\’.

Hello all
Looking forward to taking part later today (Q&A with Jen Hadfield)
Here are my answers to the questions…
1. I\’ve been writing poetry off and on consciously since I was about 14.
2. My favourite word changes every day – today it\’s arthropod (Arthur the arthropod?) – inspired by Fleur Adcock\’s Collection \’Glass Wings\’.
3. Favourite poet – far too many to choose from! Heaney, Hughes, Larkin, Laskey, Moore, (from the middle of the alphabet)
4. The best advice for me as a writer was to be true to my own voice (now, if only I could just listen a bit more and find it!)

2. Favourite word?
Dodecahedron – I\’ve never managed to get that into a poem though.

3. Favourite poet?

As per Will\’s email, I\’ll introduce myself. My profile has the personal stuff but, to answer Will\’s questions:

1. How long have you been writing poetry for?
On and (mostly) off for 30 years or so. I tend to go through a patch of writing, submit a few poems then, when they\’re rejected, give up for a few years more. I\’m determined, since I started with the Poetry School last Feb, to dedicate time to writing more analytically, getting to understand which word is best in which position for the affect I\’m after

2. Favourite word?
\’just\’

3. Favourite poet?
Constantly changes but over the past few years I\’d say Alice Oswald, though David Harsent is edging up on the inside.

4. Best piece of writing advice?
To be completely immodest, that\’d be the response I tweeted to another tweet about what a poem had to have to be worthwhile: \’Balls to rules!\’.

I\’m looking forward to this Open Day and will be participating in the ‘Show Us Your Poems’ surgery and the \’24/7 Poetry Challenge\’.

Is it essential to have a substantial list of publication credits for individual poems before approaching a publisher / small press with a collection?

Hello

My question for Jen is: When is a poem finished? I find it really difficult to know when to leave a poem – I often think it could be better, especially when I get more feedback from others. Conversely, I sometimes leave a poem too soon…

I should like to ask editors whether they would ever consider publishing a first collection by a poet who did not already have pamphlet(s) published and if so how they would make that decision.

Dear Jen
May the long time sun shine upon you…
Your poems have really pleased my eyes and my ears, taken me towards other senses and minded me of other times and places. I love the detail and the delight in language. But my question is plain nosey.
It looks as if the String Band just wriggled into the index with ‘A Very Cellular Song’, but it feels more like they were there all along, from those vowels (all the way) on. So would you be willing to satisfy some of my curiosity about you and the Incredibles?
Linda
