Hi everyone
Ive just found this group .. lots of fun looking at the pics, thank you. I travel between homes in UK and France.
While my house in France was in the early stages of being a project my writing space moved as the building work moved! Now we’re almost done and I have this wonderful space inside and, even better, a writing place on the terrace with a view of the Pyrenees … a real privilege

I really like this group – it’s wonderful looking at all the posts. This is my space most of the time. I need somewhere comfortable, preferably in the sun, so actually tend to follow it around the house as it moves! But this is my favourite, and yes that is a robin on the wall in the background – they don’t look like that here in South Australia, strange the little things you miss. I never sit at a desk to write as this is what I do for the day job, hence I opt for cushions 🙂

Fascinating seeing the spaces everyone uses. I start off poems anywhere, too, as they come, but this is where I work at them afterwards. I’ve had a bedroom of my own plenty of times in house-shares, but this is the first time I have had a separate writing room. (I do work at the day job in here, too, though – maybe I could get someone to build me an ‘earning money’ shack in the back garden in order to remove that corruption . . . ) It is also the room the cat has chosen as her own, hence the toys on the floor.

Here’s where I’ve been working today. Sadly, I don’t have the luxury of a room of my own. (Thinks…never have. Went straight from sharing a room with my sister to sharing a room with my husband.) Never went away to study as I went to Uni when the children were little. Then I worked at the kitchen table late into the night.
I harbour plans to sort out the smallest bedroom but it is stuffed with books, fabrics, felt making and painting equipment and other ‘stuff’. It will be a long job, I think.

I realised I\’d written on the wrong bit of this discursive, reflective chain that I thrive amongst sensoery overload, and cannot think straight in plain quiet places. Both me and my partner are compulsive collectors of stuff…stones, pictures, tins, fabrics, bric a brac. I think we both like something to look at wherever we turn our eyes. But I do like my own, personally cluttered, space, with a particular order to the clutter. I regret that the Pitt-Rivers museum in Oxford had become organised. And bits of stuff do turn into poems…like the ghostly fox whose bones I brought back from two separate trips to Alicante. I\’m very fond of my fox. I think she died happy. I hope so. She was certainly in a good place, up on a limestone ridge with vast views. If I\’m doing this right, I\’ll add a fast workshop poem about the mild anxieties attendant on accumulating tons of stuff, much of which has no apparent purpose. A bit like poems.

This is my office. I work in here whenever the house is empty and I can get my thoughts filling the space without any interruptions. I don’t play music or have the telly on while I work. Just my laptop and the thoughts in my head. Anyone in the house when I’m working knows I’ll be out of here when I’m ready for a tea break so I’m not disturbed. Very often!

These are some of the spaces I use to write:
Last summer I treated myself to a long weekend at St John’s College Cambridge – a wonderful room at the top of one of the old wooden staircases, overlooking the Bridge of Sighs – a short story appeared there. Then there’s the promenade at Grange-over-Sands – plenty of seats along the way to catch a note. My birthday room at Lumb Bank, at the top of the house again – I wrote over 18 poems that week! The view from my window at the Hurst, and finally a secret seat somewhere in Cumbria, where I often return to listen to the birds and write.

My desk. It’s messy, which means I’ve been busy. Also, having a fixed place to work is new to me and I’m not entirely comfortable with it yet. This is my first proper desk, having freelanced for many years, which often means hot-desking or improvising with whatever space is available (this includes: on top of a working photocopier, fire escape stairwells, cross-legged in a broken elevator, in the waiting room of a hospital across the street, a disabled toilet).

My degree was in art history, and for a long time I wanted to be a curator or picture conservationist, hence the wall decorations. As a partially deaf beta male with no sense of smell and eczema, it’s unsurprising my eyeballs bring me so much pleasure. I cannot cope with a blank wall. If you give me an empty wall space I am guaranteed to turn it into some sort of exhibition. It’s a disease.
