Discover the freshest talent from across the Atlantic with celebrated poet, educator and anthologist Peter Kahn.
Have you heard of Kara Jackson, Natalie Richardson, Kyle Dargan or Kevin Prufer? Probably not, but you should! 18-year-old Kara Jackson and 22-year-old Natalie Richardson have yet to publish a first collection, but they are making waves. Kara recently earned the Literary Award at Louder Than a Bomb (Chicago) finals, selected by Patricia Smith. Kara was a semi-finalist in Nimrod’s Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry and finished second place in the Frontier Poetry Award for New Poets, judged by Pulitzer Prize winner, Tyehimba Jess. While in high school, Natalie Richardson won the Poetry Society of America high school prize and met Michelle and Barack Obama as Young Poet Laureate of the Midwest. She was recently accepted into Northwestern University’s joint MFA/MA program; was published in Arts & Letters and Poetry Magazine; and won a $5000 poetry prize. While previously published university professors, Kyle Dargan and Kevin Prufer have somewhat flown under the radar. Forthcoming collections will certainly put them in the spotlight.
In this generative workshop, we will read/discuss hot-off-the-press work from all four American poets; pen “quick-writes” for first drafts of at least two new pieces; and, time permitting, share the results of these in-class writing sessions.
