First Encounters (Autumn 2020)

First Encounters (Autumn 2020)

Take your first steps into the world of poetry!

* To ensure the safety of our tutors and students, this course will take place on video-conferencing platform, ZOOM *

Always wanted to write poetry, but not sure where to start? Then this is the course for you! Explore the world of poetry with inspiring readings of contemporary writers and seminal poets from the past, before developing your own work with in-class exercises designed to ignite your creativity. There will be some gentle sharing and discussion of your writing, led by published poet and experienced tutor Meryl Pugh, to help you find your poetic voice, improve your skills and bring exciting new poems into the world.

10 weekly sessions on Thursdays, 6.45-8.45pm, starts 1 October. This is the first of a three-term course.

More information about how all our face-to-face courses work can be found on the Face-to-Face courses page.

About Meryl Pugh View Profile

Meryl Pugh is the author of Natural Phenomena (2018, Penned in the Margins) and two pamphlets, The Bridle (2011, Salt) and Relinquish (2007, Arrowhead Press). She has a PhD in Critical and Creative Writing from UEA and teaches for Morley College as well as the Poetry School. Her home for the last twenty years has been Leytonstone, East London.

‘Meryl is just the tutor a new poet would want. Her lessons are always interesting and informative. We are challenged yet also encouraged. She is helping us to analyse poems, partly by work-shopping each others work. She has created a ‘safe space’ for petrified poets like myself! I have been on other days/courses, so I have been able to compare – and she is the best!’
