Echoing Forms: Masterclass

Use choruses, repetition, and other techniques to create echoes and resonances that amplify.

In this Masterclass we will read a wide range of poems that use echoing forms like villanelles and pantoums, and more recent forms like duplexes and golden shovels, to explore how different poets from different times, traditions, and places utilize and redesign these forms for their purposes.  

For the final challenge of this masterclass, students will attempt a sestina. Using these several poems as wayfinders, we will seek to discover and create our own works in the fortnightly discussions and workshops. 

Masterclasses are an expanded version of our International Courses, with a much deeper consideration of technical craft and critical theory. These 12-week courses (maximum 10 places) are for advanced students only, and fluency with poetic language and ideas will be assumed. There are no live chats and they are suitable for UK and International students.

Richard Georges is a writer of essays, fiction, and three collections of poetry. He is a Fellow of the Stellenbosch Institute of Advanced Study and Virgin Islands Poet Laureate. His debut book, Make Us All Islands (Shearsman), was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection, while his second, Giant (Platypus) was highly commended by the Forward Prizes and longlisted for the OCM Bocas Prize. The most recent collection, Epiphaneia (OutSpoken), won the 2020 OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature. Richard works in higher education and lives on Tortola with his wife and children.
